Issues in 64-bit mode under Leopard
Well, nobody is perfect – LAMA has a bug. That’s the bad news. Good news: it will be fixed, and until this is done, there is a very simple workaround.
Who is affected?
As mentioned, only those (few) folks out there still using Leopard and using LAMA in 64-bit mode (which is the default, when you have a 64 bit CPU, of course)
What’s happening?
The “continuos” and “fill” mode of the Spectrum Analyzer and the Coherence Display of the Transfer Analyzer are not working correct. “Not working correct” means: it’s not working at all, and the application can crash.
So now?
Well – use LAMA in 32-bit mode instead. Disadvantage? It will cost you a few more percent of CPU power. But it should not be too much (most power of LAMA’s instruments is graphic, not calculation). I have created a short support article on how to launch LAMA in 32-bit mode.
Let me state that I really recommend to update your system to Snow Leopard.
What is causing the trouble?
For the technical interested: It’s a bug in the Accelerate library provided by Apple. The Leopard 64-bit version has a bug in a certain function. As Leopard is no longer updated, there won’t be an update for this library. Currently I am in contact with Apple to find a solution for this.
